The CMMG A1 Stock Kit – Classic and Dependable

When the AR-15 was first introduced, it shipped with the A1 stock.  This modern replica by CMMG captures all of the classic features of a Vietnam-era buttstock, with modern manufacturing to ensure it’s functional.  This stock kit includes the the rifle buffer tube, rifle buffer, rifle buffer spring, and of course the stock.

One of the best features of the A1 stock happens to be the length of pull – the distance it puts from the shooter’s shoulder to the trigger.  With an LOP of around 13 inches, most shooters will find this stock is very comfortable to shoulder, and will get a consistent cheek weld.

All CMMG products come with their Lifetime Quality Guarantee.

Includes

  • A1 Rifle Length Buttstock
  • CMMG A1 Receiver Extension (Buffer Tube)
  • AR-15 Rifle Buffer
  • AR-15 Rifle Action Spring

CMMG A1 Stocks

I ordered 4 stocks, build quality is excellent, packaging is not. All 4 stocks had scratches and scuffs from the metal rifle sling bracket hitting the other stocks in the box. I sent the worst 2 back, AT3 sent them in separate boxes and both, again had scuffs. I assume the damage is also happening in their shipments from CMMG. I paid a premium price for nice stocks ($365) that should not be scuffed up.

So sorry to hear about the issue, Michael. We sent you an email to resolve the issue.

It looks great, but beware a couple of issues

First, I love the look of this stock. Was very happy to see CMMG made this!

First issue is the butt plate is not very well made. Seems like it might break if roughly handled.

Second, the door on the butt plate is horrible.

Third, the only thing that keeps the stock from turning is the tab on the lower front of the stock that fits into the AR lower. Fot my application I'm using a chassis for a Ruger 10/22 that accepts AR furniture. Since that part of the lower isn't on the chassis, I'm having a difficult time with it not turning. And because the butt plate that holds the stock on the buffer tube isn't very thick, I'm afraid to tighten it too much and mushroom the plastic.

One other complaint these stocks get is that they are hollow and not foam filled. I think you can solve that with some spray in expanding foam. I may consider that to see if it keeps it from turning.

(Also, you can then carve out room for a cleaning kit in the foam once dry or insert a tube where the door is and let the foam fill in around it.

Not a direct reproduction of the A1 Buttstock

While this stock is very well made it fails to satisfy as a true replica of the A1 stock. While it is an almost insignificant 5/8" shorter that the A2 stock it is made from the same material as an A2 and looks and feels nothing like an original A1 stock. The sling swivel boasts an ability to swivel 180 degrees left and right. This gives the stock an odd looking swivel slot and seems like simply a way to shortcut around doing it right rather than being a significant plus. The buttplate is pure A2 meat tenderizer checkered pattern with 90 degree sharp edges rather than the smooth rolled edges and kinder pattern of an original A1. Lastly the screws provided are allen head rather than slotted like originals. Get this stock if all you want to do is lose 5/8" from your A2 but look for an original if you are building a retro rifle. None of this reflects on AT3 Tactical as they delivered it in a flash and were great to deal with. I can highly recommend AT3 Tactical for your parts.

Thanks for sharing your feedback! We're glad you're satisfied with your purchase.

Another great product from CMMG. This will be going on a 12.5" AR15 with a 1-4x LPVO
